chairsforkids-howtochooseYour child is growing up and is starting to have a more apparent personality, so now the next step every parent will face is how to choose chairs for kids that are deemed suitable. How do you decide which to buy for you little princess or a mini action figure fanatic? Some points to keep in mind when choosing are attractiveness, safety and durability.

Attractiveness:

Today’s modern kids are spoilt for choice. Chairs for kids nowadays come in a variety which are wooden, plastic, upholstered, rocking or even beanbags! However, before that you’ll need to know where you plan to use them. Here are some of the best tips:

1) For outdoors it’s best to use plastic chairs.
2) Elegent chairs for your living room.
3) Large chairs can be used as well is you have a large playroom while folding chairs for kids can be used instead for smaller rooms.

Safety:

Always, always keep safety in mind even when choosing chairs for kids. Look for chairs with a stable base and purchase those that you feel would be easy for them to climb onto. For certain chairs, you would also want to make sure they are made of fire retardant materials, non-toxis and have no rough edges.

Durability:

It’s also good to choose chairs for kids that have solid construction for better durability. Find out more about the fabric used as well so that you’ll know the chairs will outlast even the toughest use and the seams are solidly sealed. Make sure when you’re buying chairs to also adhere to the age and weight guidelines of the manufacturer.

In short, chairs for kids provide a fun and functional way to play, relax and have fun!

chairsforkids-britaxrecallThere’s been a somewhat disturbing trend going on around the world these days. What not the recent recalls we’ve heard in the automotive industry, now even chairs for kids are being recalled due to safety issues.

Here’s another important piece of news I’d like to share with fellow parents. Britax Blink Stroller chairs for kids are currently being recalled due to concerns with their hinge mechanism.

So far, 15,000 of their “Blink” umbrella strollers have been recalled due to possible fingertip amputation hazards when the stroller is being opened of closed.

I’ve also highlighted in the past that Graco and MacLaren had also initiated their own stroller recalls due to hinge safety issues as well. Most of the strollers available in the market have similar hinge designs so it’s not surprising that more recalls are taking place.

All Britax Blink strollers are included in the recall. The model numbers found on these strollers are U261813, U261814, U261815, U261816, U261817, U271813, U271817 and U271815 which were manufactured between May and September 2009.

Parents are advised to stop using the recalled strollers and contact Britax to receive free stroller hinge covers.

Toys_R_Us_logo.gifOur most favoured toy store retailer Toys R Us is urging customers to turn in potentially unsafe children’s products, as it launches its second “Great Trade-In” event.

From now through February 20, customers can bring in their used cribs, strollers, high chairs and play pens among other baby items.

In exchange, parents will get a 25 percent discount on a new purchase of any new baby product that qualifies.

Going by the first event held, customers traded in tens of thousands of unsafe baby products during last year’s Great Trade-In event.

Used car seats were the item most-frequently traded in and the item most-frequently purchased with the discounts.

Eddie Bauer, Evenflo, Graco and Jeep are all brands that are participating in the event.

chairsforkids-vamuseumHere’s some news for parents living in the UK. The V&A Museum of Childhood is going to showcase it’s Sit Down Chairs For Kids exhibition, inviting fellow parents to consider just what makes a successful chair. Is it comfort? Is it style? Or ease of use?

Spanning four centuries, the exhibition features over 70 examples of seating made for children, ranging from school chairs to armchairs, saddles to swings, highchairs to potties. Designs by Charles Eames, Vitra and El Ultimo Grito are on display, as well as the Modernist high chair by Dutch architect Gerrit Rietveld and Spotty, the 1960s paper chairs for kids designed by Peter Murdoch.

Ideas around the growing popularity of designer chairs for kids as well as how and why styles have changed over the centuries are also considered.

After centuries of traditional seating forms following accepted design conventions, the 20th century witnessed an explosion of creative solutions to the idea of seating, including chairs for kids. This exploration of new forms, materials, and production methods, as well as technological developments, resulted in more colourful and innovative seating designs for children.

I’ve also found an armchair which might just catch your child’s interest:

chairsforkids-chiccohookonI found this Chicco chairs for kids on one of my recent excursion out to the children’s department store with my dear daughter.

The one thing I liked about this high chair was that you could lock the chair in six different positions for a happy and interactive mealtime. You can either face the baby forward towards you for one-on-one feeding or face them forward to keep him happy and just let others entertain your child.

chairsforkids-boonpotty2As a new parent, we’ve talked about how we could probably get our daughter potty trained within the first few months of turning two. Having been through potty training with one child and about to embark on training the other, I sized-up Boon’s Potty Bench with interest.

In my opinion, a potty should be used for one thing only..to potty. I’m more inclined to use potty chairs for kids without the many distractions available with other chairs. What I liked about the Boon Potty was not only does it have a convenient pull out drawer for storing sanitary clean up, it also has a removable soft deflector shield. If you’ve got a boy kid, you’d understand what I mean…:) When the potty lid is closed, the deflector shield also closes with it and tucks nicely inside the potty opening.

Function wise, it also comes with two enclosed side storage spaces. One side to keep your supplies and another even has its own built-in toilet paper holder. Everything can be stored within your reach when training your child.

chairsforkids-boonpotty

When not using the Boon potty chairs for kids, all you have to do is close the lid and it becomes a large sturdy stool, able to hold up to 300 pounds of weight! If you’ve been following my previous posts, I’ve also wrote about other multi function chairs that are not only cool but saves you money in the long term.

With the Boon potty chair, there’s no need for a separate stool for your kid to use when in the bathroom. This is one potty chairs for kids I’ll always like for its practical, functional, and pleasing to the eye product.

Here’s a short summary of what to expect:

  • Comes in white and lime green.
  • Measures 19 1/2″ x 12 7/8″ x 7 1/8″.
  • Has side storage compartments on each side.
  • Easy-to-open lid that, when closed, allows the bench to double as a seat or step-stool.
  • Will support up to 300 pounds of tiny toddler hiney or post-birth mama girth.
  • Comes with removable urine shield for boys.
  • Potty bowl pulls out for easy cleaning.
